Background of the Study
Vlog narratives from Ibadan provide a unique lens to examine the impact of social media engagement on syntactic structures in Nigerian communication. Social media platforms encourage informal language practices that often result in syntactic simplification and innovation. Vloggers, influenced by digital trends and audience feedback, adapt traditional sentence structures to suit a dynamic and interactive environment (Olu, 2023). This study investigates how vlog narratives reflect changes in syntax, including shortened sentences, unconventional clause arrangements, and the integration of code-switching. By analyzing a corpus of vlogs from Ibadan, the research seeks to understand how digital engagement reshapes language use, balancing informality with clarity. The study further explores how these syntactic shifts contribute to a broader evolution of Nigerian English in digital contexts, highlighting the interplay between technology, culture, and linguistic adaptation (Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing prevalence of vlogs in Nigerian digital media, there is limited research on how social media engagement influences syntactic structures in these narratives. Variations in sentence construction and the use of informal syntax may affect the clarity and effectiveness of vlog communication (Olu, 2023). The lack of systematic analysis of these changes poses challenges for educators and media practitioners aiming to bridge digital and formal language usage (Ibrahim, 2024). Without comprehensive study, the broader impact of digital engagement on syntactic evolution in Nigerian English remains unclear, hindering efforts to develop effective communication strategies (Adebola, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To analyze syntactic patterns in vlog narratives from Ibadan.

  • To assess the impact of digital engagement on syntactic structures.

  • To recommend strategies for effective digital communication.

Research Questions

  • What syntactic changes are evident in Ibadan vlog narratives?

  • How does social media engagement influence these syntactic structures?

  • What strategies can enhance clarity in digital communication?

Significance of the Study
This study illuminates the influence of social media engagement on syntactic evolution in Nigerian vlog narratives. Its findings will benefit digital content creators, educators, and linguists by offering strategies to improve clarity and maintain effective communication in online media (Olu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024; Adebola, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study is confined to vlog narratives from Ibadan and does not extend to other digital media or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Syntax: The arrangement of words and phrases to create sentences.

  • Vlog Narratives: Video blogs that document personal or topical content.

  • Social Media Engagement: Interaction with digital content through likes, comments, and shares.
